Colonna (1492-1547) was almost universally recognized in scholarly accounts of her time as an important literary figure, one of the primary vehicles by which the linguistic and Petrarchan ideals that Bembo solidified in the early decades of the 16th century filtered farther south. Brundin (Italian, U. of Cambridge) says that she was also a political intermediary, a religious reformer, and more problematically a long female voice in a male-dominated cultural arena.
