By the seventh century BC, Greeks were using epigrams for sepulchral inscriptions to say something about the dead, and within two centuries, such epigrams were being collected in books. At some point, anthologists became impatient with the death rate, and began making epigrams up. Bruss examines the fictive sepulchral epigrams and epigrams on funerary themes in Book Seven of the Palatine Anthology compiled in the late fourth or early third century BC. The study served as his doctoral dissertation in classics at the University of Minnesota in 2000. Distributed in the US by the David Brown Book Company.
