Social psychologists from across the US at all stages of their career were invited to a conference in the spring 2001 in Bloomington, Indiana, and asked to bring the working draft for a paper relating in some way to identity theory as espoused by Sheldon Stryker. Discussion and further revising produced the 13 papers on sources of identity; identities and social structure; identities, emotion, and health; and multiple identities. Among their topics are family resemblances as the root of identity, links between self and stratification processes, and using identity discrepancy theory to predict psychological distress.
