What do Fight Club, Continental philosophy and Sor Juana de la Cruz have in common? According to Burningham (Spanish and comparative literature, Illinois State U.) they share, amongst other characteristics, a certain propensity for the inward glance. Burningham compares several contemporary texts, including Brazil, The Matrix, and The Moor's Last Sigh against a cluster of early modern Spanish and Latin American literary works, principally Don Quixote. By juxtaposing these texts he explores the notion that each of these varied cultural products can be read as precursors to each other, especially for contemporary readers who may not come to them in their proper chronological order. At the same time he compares similarities between the postmodern and the baroque, especially their preoccupation with mirrors, and argues that those practicing in the postmodern have actually been rediscovering terrain already occupied by Cervantes, Lope de Vega, and Francisco de Quevedo.
