Claire regularly receives calls from Barred Owls but never one from a cell phone. Home schooled in the mountains of Pennsylvania, she is an avid birder, who draws birds to her in some inexplicable way. So beginning public school as a sixth grader is no simple task, especially given her uncommon appearance: snow-white hair, bleached skin, and yellow-gold eyes that she hides behind blue-tinted lenses. Quickly dubbed “Bird Brain” by the school bully, Claire looks to her Native American friend, Victor, for support. And to Victor alone she shares news of continuing encounters with a Red-tailed Hawk and an old man in the woods. Yet later she is horrified to learn that Victor and the bully (Billy) are also friends, premier “gamers” obsessed with a simulated flight to Mars. While Billy tries to undermine her, Claire works to woo Victor from his gaming world into her green one, where successive threats are made against the hawk's life. Eventually, all three adolescents become agents in the single event that will either save or end the legendary hawk's life.
