This laboratory manual teaches hands-on and communication skills necessary to integrate theory and clinical practice in respiratory care. This second edition adds new chapters on cultural diversity, phlebotomy, IV insertion, chest tube drainage systems, bronchoscopy assisting, and respiratory care in alternate settings. The book's 46 lab exercises contain step-by-step instructions, illustrated with detailed b&w photos, diagrams, and illustrations, showing students how to perform each procedure. Lab report forms, procedural competency evaluation forms, and critical thinking questions are included. The exercises are designed to promote critical thinking rather than to solely practice skills; some of the exercises are designed for students to purposely set up or use equipment incorrectly. Most chapters can be completed in one or more formally scheduled two-hour lab periods. The longer chapters found in the first edition have been divided into shorter chapters to fit this time frame. The text is detailed enough so that students can perform the exercises with minimal supervision in an independent practice setting as a supplement or replacement for a scheduled lab period. An appendix offers normal and critical values, formulas, and rules of thumb. A glossary is also included. The book is three-hole-punched the whole way through. Butler teaches science at Rockland Community College. Annotation ©2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
