Editor Butterworth and his contributors examine the roles of three elements of European medieval stage production: the prompter, the expositor, and the narrator. The individuals who adopted these roles were an important part of the production of plays of the era. A prompter, for example, may have had no role other than the responsibility for helping actors with their lines, but also may have done double duty as a performer. The purpose of the essays is to explore these roles to identify their influence on the performance of medieval plays. By looking at these roles and their ability to function both inside and outside the action on stage, the essays portray how theatrical productions of the time were able to teach by telling stories and to influence audience opinion regarding the issue or issues addressed.
