In the 14 years since he produced the second edition, says Button (public policy, George Mason U., US), there have been significant changes in the understanding of factors influencing demand for transport services, approaches to modeling and estimating how a variety of factors influence transport use, attention paid to climate change and terrorism, information technology and other matters. In addition to incorporating these, he has also made some structural changes to accommodate the intermediate economics textbook being used in US semesters as well as the British 10-week terms. He has retained the title, however, on the theory that Americans can get used to the term transport more easily than Australians could feel comfortable with the term transportation. Among his topics are the external costs of transport, some economics of transport logistics, transport planning and forecasting, transport and developments, and the economic regulation of transport.
