Although the US Constitution contained provisions outlawing the slave trade in 1808, it was not until 1942 that it created an enforcement mechanism in the form of the US Navy's Africa Squadron, which began efforts to capture slave traders off the coast off the west coast of Africa although by the end of its 20 year history, it only had an anemic 36 captures to show fro its efforts. Naval historian (Canney) narrates the history of the squadron chronologically from commander to commander examining the approaches taken towards suppressing the slave trade, issues of logistics, climate and health issues, qualities and types of vessels used, relations with the British Africa Squadron, and other topics. He confirms the judgement of W.E.B. DuBois that the squadron was an unqualified failure, but is somewhat kinder to the squadron's commanders, placing the blame for the squadron's problems much higher up the chain of command in the US Navy.
