In its original conception, this interdisciplinary collection on the political culture and cultural politics of Weimar Germany was organized by the editors (all of the U. of Michigan) in order to critically engage with the "tenacious" notion of Weimar as being characterized by a "crisis of classical modernity," as argued by Detlef Peukert in his 1992 study, The Weimar Republic, although the proceedings do not attempt to provide any unified alternative narrative to counter Peukert's argument. The collection's 17 essays explore case studies of German political languages and cultural categories of public and subject in the period calamitously bookended by Germany's humiliating defeat in World War I and the rise of the Nazis. They are organized into sections thematically concerned with visual culture and the memory of war, citizens and subjectivities, symbolic contests over democracy and public space, the cultural dichotomy of the mass and the individual, and topographies of modernity.
