John Capps (philosophy, Rochester Institute of Technology) and Donald Capps (psychology of religion, Princeton Theological Seminary) are a father and son team that provide an analysis of the ways jokes illustrate how people think critically. The authors demonstrate that jokes can illustrate how the thinking process can run off the track. Their argument is that jokes work by invoking standards of rational thinking that are violated by the joke. They also argue that many jokes assume ethical and moral truths, and that what makes them funny is when those truths are violated. They also discuss the importance of critical thinking, critical thinking and objective truth, and fallacies of relevance, evidence, and assumption. While very readable, the book also is very logical and not as lightweight as the title may imply. Annotation ©2010 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
