Based on 20 years of research, Carbaugh (communication, U. of Massachusetts) introduces readers to the ethnographic study of intercultural and social interactions by analyzing several specific conversations in which different cultural orientations are operating, seeking to hear in them, cultures at work. The case studies involve conversations from Britain, Finland, Russia, Blackfeet Country, and the United States, with each being in some sense distinctive in its communication codes its use of symbolic meanings, forms, norms, and motivational themes. The focus on intercultural interactions in conversations demonstrates how cultural lives are active in conversation, in different ways, and how conversation is a principal medium for the coding of selves, social relationships, and societies.
