Swedish archaeologist Carlsson analyzes the excavations at Motola, Sweden of a Mesolithic settlement found in the early 1990s in preparation for the building of a railway bridge. The site was inhabited from about 5500-5000 BCE by a group that produced flint and quartz tools and lived mainly on fish. Carlsson uses post-modern methodology to recreate the society in terms of its relationship to the community, neighborhood and the world at large. He gives examples of local goods and those that were manufactured elsewhere. In this archaeology of space he compares Motola with other settlements in Scandinavia and beyond. The study spirals into the district with its lakes and streams and into the immediate neighborhood including fauna, flora, rocks and water. He ends with the home. For each section he gives a thorough scientific description of all finds, which are catalogued in the appendix. He also allows himself some speculation on the cosmology of the people as reflected in their building designs and possibly ritual artifacts. Several photographs and sketches of the site are included.
