Diehard true believers insist that the faster economic growth and falling proportion of people living in absolute poverty across Africa from the middle 1990s to 2005 is a delayed payoff of earlier neoliberal economic reforms on the continent. Carmody (geography, Trinity College, Dublin) is not one. He argues that the current round of economic restructuring in the early years of the millennium is shaped by other social processes operating at a variety of scales, and changes to the nature of globalization on the continent itself. He examines how Africa's mode of integration into the global economy over the past decade has changed, and the political, social, and economic ramifications of the change. His topics are Chinese and US interests, the commodity boom, the scramble for oil, overcoming the resource curse, the mobile phone revolution, and global turbulence.
