In the nineteenth century America paid taxes to maintain religiously based schools that focused on moral education and included the same students now served in secular schools. The schools were considered the bulwark of the republic--an essential agent of order, morals and civic virtues in an America beset by emigrants, declining morals and lack of attention to mainstream religion. Alongside these institutions were others controlled by those who objected to the process of "mainstreaming" every child in America, regardless of faith, family preferences, and needs in future education and employment. Carper (education, U. of South Carolina) and Hunt (education, U. of Dayton) examine instances of Catholic and Protestant nonconformity whether in home schooling or classroom-based instruction in which conflicts arose about how and what students were taught. The results, including the long litigations are fascinating, given today's controversies about the same issues. Annotation ©2007 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
