Both of these artists are important in distinctly different ways to modernism, and Carrier (art criticism, Case Western Reserve U. the Cleveland Institute of Art) extracts from Proust and Warhol the essence of their agreements and differences. In Proust Carrier finds a master of imaginary art, working as a composer, painter and novelist. In Warhol we find what would at first be quite the opposite, until we read Carrier's analysis of such works as Marilyn Diptych and his explanation of how both men understood art-making. As Carrier moves back and forth from Proust's studio to Warhol's factory he describes elements of their life and work that correspond and contrast: their sexuality, their aesthetic theory (by way of Danto), their representation by others (by way of Landy), and the art they made of their lives (by way of Nehamas). He concludes with a stand-alone article about Warhol's relation of art and fashion. Annotation ©2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
