Carroll (military and strategic studies, U. of Calgary) tells the behind the scenes story of Canadian statesman Lester Pearson (1897-1972) and his efforts to tame what had become an anarchic United Nations during the Cold War era and maintain peace during the late 1950s. Pearson later became Canada's prime minister and was the 1957 winner of the Nobel Peace Prize. While it is unfortunate that most people outside Canada probably associate his name with Toronto's airport and not much more, his diplomatic achievements on the international stage were monumental. He is credited not so much for bringing peace or averting war during the 1956 Suez crisis, but for defusing circumstances that could have caused war. Nuance, it seems, colored every decision and every action in an extremely tricky, volatile era for politicians and diplomacy. Nothing was black or white, right or wrong. The author's skill, in addition to telling a truly engaging story, is in capturing all of the shades of gray in his finely-tuned description of an extremely complex time.
