A pedagogy based on rote memorization and exams is an unlikely setting to teach teenagers the difference between lust and love and the proper use of a condom. Castro-Vázquez (Keio U.) found this to be so in the educational system of Japan, which is presently making the inevitably bumpy transition from tradition to postmodernism in all subjects, including sex education. His research, which includes quantitative and qualitative elements, including an ethnographic study, interviews and participant observation, shows that subcurrents within Japanese culture run deep and spill over into every field of study for senior high students. His focus, which is on masculinity in Japan, attitudes toward contraception and perceptions about how to give information to youths without prompting them to act upon it, makes this a complex study of culture and gender, particularly when he introduces curriculum designed to meet the needs of students rather than the educational system.
