In association with the Kaplan Centre for Jewish Studies, U. of Cape Town, and the Parkes Institute for the Study of Jewish/non- Jewish relations, U. of Southampton, Cesarani (U. of London) compiles 12 essays originating from a conference of the same title held at the U. of Cape Town in 2005. Essays and case studies first explore questions of a Jewish sense of place and belonging despite upheavals, from interwar Italy to anti-apartheid South Africa. Subsequent essays treat cross-cultural shaping of Jewish identity from 18th century Surinam to 20th century London. These studies first appeared in a special issue of Jewish Culture and History, v.9, no. 2-3 [ISSN 1462-169X], published by Vallentine Mitchell. Distributed in the US by ISBS.
