He discusses how these communist regimes tried to create a new morally and psychologically superior human, the intellectual and ideological basis in the Enlightenment and other European traditions, the countries' historical traditions, and how the attempts to create a new model of human paralleled their efforts to create a new society. He also examines their political and economic programs, as well as their effects on each other and globally. The book is based on the Cheng's dissertation.
