Cheng (history, Delaware State U.) examines how the Soviet Union under Lenin and Stalin, China under Mao, and Cuba under Castro attempted to implement the concept of the "new man." He discusses how these communist regimes tried to create a new morally and psychologically superior human, the intellectual and ideological basis in the Enlightenment and other European traditions, the countries' historical traditions, and how the attempts to create a new model of human paralleled their efforts to create a new society. He also examines their political and economic programs, as well as their effects on each other and globally. The book is based on the Cheng's dissertation. It is intended for students and scholars of world history and intellectual, social, and revolutionary history, development studies, and philosophy.
