Alfred Gell (1945-1997) was a British social anthropologist who died young, of cancer. In 2008, ten years after his influential book's posthumous publication, a symposium on Art and Agency (1998) convened in Cambridge, attracting anthropologists and art historians who have critiqued and analyzed his "anthropological theory of art," and have drawn inspiration from the radical depths of his thinking. The two editors are affiliated as follows: Liana Chua (anthropology, Brunei U., West London, UK) and Mark Elliott (exhibitions coordinator, the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, U. of Cambridge, UK). Along with presentations from the symposium, the editors have included a few other contributions, among them a hitherto unpublished essay written by Gell around 1985.
