Psychotherapists Church and Brooks develop the concept of "subtle suicide," a psychological condition, rooted in trauma and often misdiagnosed as a symptom of addictive or mood disorders, which causes people to lead self-destructive lives because they don't care if they live or die. The book will help professionals, families, and friends to realize when someone may be suffering from subtle suicide, and help sufferers understand why psychiatric medications fail to bring them relief. The first five chapters, written for general readers, define subtle suicide and its causes, and give advice on responding to those exhibiting symptoms. The many case studies are based on the authors' psychotherapy clients, and also include biographical sketches of well-known people such as Marilyn Monroe and Anna Nicole Smith. Advice on getting professional help is limited to a few suggestions for finding a counselor who treats the "whole person." The last three chapters, geared toward students and professionals, cover theoretical and historical considerations, formal treatment (especially Steven Hayes' acceptance and commitment therapy [ACT]), and measuring subtle suicide. A brief patient questionnaire is provided. Church teaches psychology at King's College. Brooks is professor and chair of the Department of Psychology at King's College, Annotation ©2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
