The Republic of Moldova is a landlocked country in Eastern Europe, located between Romania and Ukraine that has at various times been politically ruled by the Russian Empire, Romania, and the Soviet Union, resulting in an uncertain national and linguistic identity that is alternately oriented towards Russia or towards Romania and the West. Ciscel (English, Central Connecticut State U.) examines these tensions of identity, arguing that language use and social status are inextricably meshed. His primary entrance into these issues consists of case studies of the identities and linguistic practices of six students at the State U. of Moldova in Chisinau as related to the social, political, and institutional contexts of their life stories. He also examines the results of broad survey of Molodovan attitudes towards Russian and Romanian and relates them to issues of social identity.
