This collection of primary source material chronicles the WWI experiences of the 4th Marine Brigade, part of the US Army Second Division Regulars that served with the American Expeditionary Forces. The first-hand accounts come from wartime letters and journals and postwar memoirs and interviews, and are organized in chronological chapters from boot camp through specific battles and occupation. The men describe their hardships and the loss of comrades and relate combat details. Most of the primary source material has not been published, or has not been published since the end of the war. Each chapter begins with a brief intro giving background. The book includes b&w historical photos and maps. Clark has written other books on military history.
