In a revision of his 2004 doctoral dissertation in Oriental and African studies at the University of London, Clark offers an account of the history and practices of one of the largest of the orthodox sects of South Asian sadhu-s, people who have renounced family life and conventional means of making a livelihood. After describing the current structure and organization of the Da'sanami order and its various branches, he investigates its origins, critically examining the standard claims of tradition and identifying various religious and political developments that may have led to its formation, probably in the late 16th or early 17th century.
