Cloitre (child and adolescent psychiatry, New York U.) et al. provide, for mental health practitioners, evidence-based treatment methods for working with clients who have experienced past physical or sexual abuse or neglect. The format follows two phases: skills training for affective and interpersonal regulation (STAIR), which stresses resources, and narrative story telling (NST), which focuses on traumatic memories. The reader is led through each session, after first considering the effects of abuse and theoretical foundations. The treatment, which emphasizes cognitive-behavioral therapy, was originally developed for women, but can also be used for men and children and adolescents. Reproducible handouts are included.
