This two-volume collection compiles 49 journal articles on transnational retail in the global economy, dating from 1988 to 2008. Selections are based in part on citation evidence that suggests which pieces are shaping the nature of the research agenda. The editors seek to give equal voice to the different disciplinary perspectives within the recent surge of work on retail globalization. The majority of articles report on research on the activities of food and general merchandise retailers, and to a lesser extent, clothing retailers. An introduction to the collection situates the papers within the wider literature on the issues covered in each section and comments on the significance of each contribution, then offers a perspective on the future agenda of research on. Volume I contains sections on early assessments of retail globalization; the surge of retail FDI and the retail revolution in developing countries; scoping and theorizing the emerging retail TNC; and institutional perspectives on transnational retail capital. Volume II covers host economy and developmental impacts of transnational retail; global, regional, and responsible sourcing by transnational retailers; and the contested process of market entry, expansion, and exit by transnational retailers. Coe is a reader in economic geography at the University of Manchester, UK. Wrigley is professor of geography at the University of Southampton, UK. A subject index is not included.
