Cohen and Markman are, respectively, director of the integrative medicine program and vice president of clinical research at the M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. They examine the work being done there and four other cancer centers in combining conventional cancer treatments: surgery, chemotherapy, radiation etc., with traditional treatments: botanicals, acupuncture, massage, and mind-body exercises such as meditation and yoga among others. After comparing how these are used at each center and making the novel suggestion that the patient be involved in the decision-making process, there are informative reports on trials done on the effects of these non-conventional treatments, especially the possibility of adverse interactions with established ones.
