Cole and Flexer present the third edition of their textbook for undergraduate and graduate training of those who work with children who have hearing loss. The book begins with an overview of the neurological foundations of listening and talking, normal hearing development, a model of hearing loss and the "essential question" of what vision a family has for its child. Then follows a description of the audiovestibular system, hearing, and hearing loss and its medical aspects. They examine how hearing loss is diagnosed, including the screening of newborns, followed by discussion of technological interventions such as hearing aids, cochlear implants and FM systems, and related issues. There is a lesson on auditory "work," having to do with helping a child learn to listen, and one on the science of spoken language learning. A following lesson goes into normal communication and spoken language development for young children. The final chapter details methods and practices for interacting in ways that promote listening and talking. Annotation ©2015 Ringgold, Inc., Portland, OR (protoview.com)
