Comber (1944-2004) and Balmaceda (Pontificia U. Católica de Chile) met at the University of Oxford where he taught and she studied classics. He asked her to help with the commentary on his recent translation of the Bellum Jugurthinum, warning her that she might well have to finish it alone. She did both. Roman historian and politician Gaius Sallustius Crispus (86-35 BC) wrote about the 111 BC Roman war against a leader in the conquered African province of Carthage who rebelled when he was awarded less than he thought he was due in the Roman settlement of an inheritance dispute.
