Wayfinding is a term for the ways in which visitors and staff find their way from point to point in a building or facility. The field encompasses signage, architectural elements, tactile elements, environmental graphics, and technology such as touch-screen computers. This book will help executive and department-level managers to plan, develop, and implement new or improved wayfinding programs in healthcare facilities. Early chapters deal with recognizing problems and obtaining data to target needs. Later chapters give advice on selecting a project team and moving forward to plan, design, and implement the wayfinding program. One chapter is devoted to the significance of codes and standards in wayfinding, and one chapter is devoted to wayfinding in healthcare facilities other than hospitals. Numerous case examples are included, illustrated with b&w and color photos. About 25 pages of appendices provide sample letters and forms, standards, and Spanish translations of commonly used English text. In addition to healthcare managers, the book will also be useful for graphic designers and architects who work with healthcare clients. Cooper is a consultant in healthcare design.
