Based on meetings held at his campus since 2000, Corrigan (psychiatry, U. of Chicago) introduces the problem of the continuing stigma attached to mental illness in examples of how even former mental patients are discriminated against by society. Contributors to 15 chapters overview the problem and ways to overcome barriers from multi-disciplinary perspectives. The editor concludes that eliminating the symptoms of mental illness is insufficient to reduce the stigma and that, as in Martin Luther King's dream of racial equality, more social science research and legal parity is needed.
