Craft-Rosenberg (emeritus, nursing, U. of Iowa) has devoted her career to investigation of health and illness in the context of the family, that is, how illness in one family member affects the other members, and how nurses can offer positive intervention. Pehler (nursing, St. Ambrose U.) is heavily involved in grief support for children and families. The two have joined forces as editors of this reference, which brings together contributed entries pertaining to the following broad themes identified in the Reader's Guide: at-risk conditions and situations (e.g. alcohol addictions, bullying, death from various causes, incest, lead poisoning); education of health care providers; factors influencing family health (various religions, socioeconomic status, cultural attitudes toward help-seeking); acute physical and mental illness in families; transitions; the health care system; health assessment; family health perspectives (e.g. theory, demographics, informed consent issues, qualitative and quantitative methods of study); interventions; and genetics. After the introductory essay giving a historical overview, entries are arranged alphabetically, each with references and cross references. The second volume appends a resource guide and the index. This two-volume set will be valuable for a wide audience of health care providers as well as professionals working with children and families in diverse settings.
