Five papers document an October 2006 technical workshop in Faringdon, England that was called by the Society to examine the selection, derivation, and implementation of environmental quality standards. Participants are from ecology, ecotoxicology, environmental chemistry, environmental regulation, sociology, and risk assessment. In addition to the introduction and the title study, they cover setting environmental standards within a socioeconomic context, how an environmental standard should be implemented, and the derivation and applications of water and sediment environmental quality standards. One of their conclusions is that the various standards have been developed separately in different fields, and so are difficult to compare or combine.
