More than 175 pages of documents are organized into thematic units on late-nineteenth- and turn-of-the-century American society covering tenement life; shops, saloons, and concert halls; working women from the perspective of others; working women telling their own stories; prostitution; realism; and slum fiction. Among the materials included are selections by Jacob Riis, criticism by Henry James and William Dean Howells, excerpts from contemporary newspaper accounts, Senate testimony, and an early sketch by Stephen Crane of Bowery life.
