Since his 1994 text, Beta-Blockers in Clinical Practice, 2nd ed, Dr. Cruickshank notes that much has been learned in understanding the role of beta-blockers (e.g., propranolol or Inderal) in treating hypertension and preventing death from cardiovascular disease. Disagreeing with a UK committee recommendation that ACE (angiotensin-converting enzyme) inhibitors or ARBs (angiotensin-receptor blockers) should be preferred first-line agents over beta-blockers, he discusses the main conditions for which beta-blockers are indicated following an overview of their pharmacology.
