Presented in earlier form at a conference, "Death and dying in Buddhist cultures", held in May 2002 at Princeton U., the 14 essays offer a wide-ranging overview of Buddhist attitudes, traditions, practices, and rites concerning death and dying. Among the topics are self- immolation and other forms of ritual suicide by monks, deathbed practices in Heian Japan, death accounts in Tibetan hagiography, and current trends and controversies in the practice of scattering ashes in contemporary Japan. The first two chapters discuss in detail the death of the Buddha in early accounts and its influence on traditions in India. Cuevas (Florida State U.) and Stone (Princeton U.) provide a lengthy introduction. Both a joint Chinese and Korean and a Japanese character glossary are provided.
