Dalston and Pullin (both U. of North Texas) present a text for K-12 library media and technology specialists who are interested in beginning a virtual reference service within their library but lack the resources to use commercially produced software or the ability to enter into a collaborative agreement to participate in a regional or statewide virtual reference project. The opening chapter describes a logical method and provides some practical checklists for beginning to investigate implementing real-time virtual reference services with limited time and resources. The remaining five self-contained chapters consist of five case studies completed in 2005 by 20 doctoral students from the U. of North Texas School of Library and Information Sciences, which address the knowledge and skills needed in evaluating, acquiring and using electronic databases, Internet materials, and online services, and some of the issues in offering online services.
