Daly, who has written and edited several books on the Sudan, and Hogan, who is responsible for the Sudan Archive at Durham University Library, present a selection of photographs from that collection relating to the British presence in the northern African country. Some of them have historical value, settling controversies, illustrating events well known, or depicting people or places otherwise known to the west only in words. Other illustrate daily life among the British or between them and the Sudanese, standards of living, modes of transportation, habits of dress, and similar aspects.
