Broadly speaking, the Korean 1.5 generation refers to the bilingual children of immigrants or immigrants who arrived in their formative years and identify with both Korean and American culture. A "1.5er" herself, Danico (sociology, California State Polytechnic U.) investigates how Korean immigrants to Hawai'i are socialized into their identities. Using participant observation with a group of 20 to 30 year old 1.5 generation Korean Americans, she examines the effect of family, the Korean American community, the larger society, and the collective consciousness of the 1.5 generation on ethnic identity formation.
