Archaic Sicily has historical narrative only for the very beginning (Thucydides) and very end (Herodotus), says De Angelis (classical, Near Eastern, and religious studies; U. of British Columbia-Vancouver) so the study of the middle must rely on archaeology. He has chosen the two cities because the archaeological database of both sites is ample enough, neither has been inhabited notably since antiquity, and they are diverse in space and foundation time (eighth and seventh centuries, BC). Taking them in turn, he looks at the setting, settlement development, society and politics, and environment and economy.
