He was a solid model of the conscientious nineteenth-century professional politician. Despite his unassuming presidency and the reforms it produced in civil service, few remember him except when they recite the list of names that starts with George Washington. However, Dehler (no affiliation given) argues that Arthur's tenure, which came after the assassination of his predecessor, was meant to calm the nation with good intentions rather than to keep wounds open, and that Arthur was successful largely in making as little trouble as possible in a rapidly industrializing and globalizing economy. Whether Arthur was up to the task of leadership is hard to tell, as he had all of his private papers destroyed shortly before his death, but Dehler relies on a range of other primary and secondary sources to present this unassuming president to young and general readers.
