The study is based on a graduate course by Deift at the Courant Institute in Fall 2005, and a modified version of it that Gioev taught at the University of Rochester in Spring 2007. They begin by presenting a unified treatment of the algebraic aspects of the unitary, orthogonal, and symplectic ensembles, following the approach of Tracy and Widom. Then they explain their own work on the proof of universality in the bulk for orthogonal and symplectic ensembles. In this introductory text, they limit their presentation to results, and for the most part refer to their fuller treatises for the proofs themselves.
