Piazza (political science and public policy analysis, University of Catania) and Della Porta (sociology, European University Institute) study two examples of local protests against government projects. One is at the Val de Susa, where a tunnel was proposed for a high-speed train connection to France. The other is a proposed bridge from Sicily to Calabria. The authors note that the protesters had to overcome the accusation of resisting progress because it disturbed their private worlds and how these local movements became tied to ecological and political issues. They trace the stages of the protests and the methods through which they gained the support of a wider segment of the population. This is not a happy story of the little guy winning against corporate greed; the tunnel has been temporarily stopped but the bridge is still scheduled for construction. It is instead a thoughtful analysis of social conflict, how it forges disparate groups into a single society. The authors also provide sensible suggestions that might help authorities to avoid future conflicts. Annotation ©2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
