Imitating aspects of major, canonical works is a relatively common practice in literature, but as this work demonstrates, the French Renaissance poets of the Pléiade school were frequent imitators of minor works found in the Italian Giolito anthologies (and elsewhere). The author examines the imitation practices of the Pléiade poets and their implications for theories of writing and reading. She argues that the minor model imitation practices probably began as a way for writers to exercise their skills before attempting to engage "loftier" literature, but became over time a way for the poets to address their fellow poets in an allusive way that would not necessarily be recognized by the general audience.
