This book about Michigan writers created by two Michigan writers interested in regional history is organized by region within the state; each region contains biographies of three to six writers. The book is clearly designed to appeal to a market of Michigan-boosters and Michigan residents interested in local history. Carl Sandburg, Theodore Roethke, and Ring Lardner each merit a chapter, but Robert Frost, Jane Kenyon, and Arthur Miller must share a single chapter, as none of them resided within the state for their working lives or wrote extensively about Michigan. The other writers in the book are not as widely known. They range in era from the 19th century to contemporary. The book's primary subject is Michigan history, and how the state of Michigan influenced the work of locals who wrote. It is not a book about literature or these writers' work. Illustrated with black and white photographs of writers and the houses in which they lived, the book will be of interest to readers with a strong interest in the state of Michigan, and readers with a specific interest in the lives of one or more of the authors profiled who is not well enough known to have a more extensive biography.
