Derayeh (York U., Canada) reconstructs the shifting status and economic and political rights of Iranian women from before the arrival of Islam through the years of the Shah and the Islamic Republic of Iran. Consciously seeking to challenge Orientalist biases of Judaeo-Christian scholarship as well as biases of the Islamo-centric scholarship encouraged by the current regime, she is particularly concerned with those changes in status and rights that are traceable to the influence of Islam in general and the Quran in particular. She also considers whether it is possible to use a progressive reading of the Quran in order to improve women's status and rights today. Annotation ©2006 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
