Derber (sociology, Boston College) argues that "the idea of 'sociopathic society' is necessary to understand today's world." To this end, he presents an anatomy of sociopathic society, especially in the context of American society and how it permeates with a sociopathic individualism. He examines sociopathy at several levels, from individual communication behaviors to empire and capitalism itself. He considers fascism and the relationship between the far right. Derber's tone is moralistic, but compelling on rational grounds as well. He examines the "corporate regime" from the perspective of classical social theory (Marx, Weber, Durkeheim) and shows how it inculcates sociopathy in us through war and consumerism; how climate change is driven by capitalist sociopathy; and alternatives to sociopathic society, such as global democracy, and the living historical actors realizing those alternatives.
