Recent scholarship questions the orality-literacy polarity in Homeric studies. In this revised version of her dissertation in classical philology (Princeton U., 1998), Derderian analyzes the nonlinear influence of literacy on the development of genres of mourning in ancient Greece including grave epigrams, tragedy, and Athenian epitaphioi . Taking the oral tradition of lament in the Homeric poems as her point of departure, the author studies interrelationships between individual-collective and passive-reactive death rituals; parses the semantics and heroic milieu of written texts commemorating warriors in the archaic and classical periods; and through case studies, traces the evolution of the written memorial into a medium of civic history. Indexed by general subject and Greek terms. The author is currently a political activist in Berlin. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
