Diakides and Bronzino compile 24 chapters discussing new ideas, concepts, and technologies in medical infrared imaging, as well as historical background, clinical applications, and standards. Technology and hardware covered include detectors and materials, uncooled focal plane arrays, high performance systems, camera characterization, electronics for on-chip image processing, optics, and cost-reduction designs. Other chapters address dynamic thermal imaging and thermal tomography, the fundamentals of infrared breast imaging, the early detection of breast cancer, biometrics, and applications in surgery, dental, skeletal and neuromuscular diseases, and in veterinary medicine. Databases, storage, and ethics are topics that conclude the volume. It is aimed at those in medical and biomedical engineering. Diakides, who is associated with a company that deals with advanced biomedical technology and innovative defense research on sensors, is the inventor of the MedATR concept that led to the first IR-CAD for the early detection of breast abnormalities and other applications. Bronzino teaches applied science at Trinity College. Contributors are medical, biophysics, engineering, and other specialists from North America, Europe, and Singapore.
